Social Grade

Social grade has been used in the UK advertising and marketing industries for decades to identify respondent buying behaviour.

SelfCoder’s social grading algorithm is a proprietary algorithm.  It is designed by Fusion Software and based on input from a panel of vastly experienced market research interviewers working with the SOC2000 occupation classification database containing over 25,000 occupations.

Please note: that while our other product Grader,  uses the latest version of the data from the MRS publication ‘Occupation Groupings – A Job Dictionary’, SelfCoder does NOT use this as the data source.  While the results are similar for overlapping occupations, the calculations differ and SelfCoder classifies 20 times as many occupations with a more detailed level of data collection.

SOC2000

The SOC2000 data is the current occupation classification system used by the government.  It was used in the last census and major government surveys requiring occupation classification use this system.

The classification is a hierarchic system.  There are 9 major groups that occupations are classified into, but within each of those are further groups.  In total there are four levels of classification containing over 300 groups.

The tree structure below illustrates that the SOC2000 is a hierarchic classification with major groups containing one or more component groups.  We recommend viewing the online demonstration to see for yourself the benefits of using SOC2000 to your organisat
